VHSL has Approved Regular-season, postseason format for high school sports

As reported by The News & Advance, the VHSL late last week approved return to play with altered regular and post season formats. The executive committee approved a Championships +1 format. What does this mean?

For the regular season, high school teams will play 60% of a schedule that they would normally play. Post season play will narrow to fewer qualifying teams for state tournaments. Teams that do not make their regional tournaments will be allowed one extra contest, which is the +1 part of this new format.

When possible, State tournaments will be limited to one day events and limited to 250 participants including athletes, coaches, support personnel and fans. The Governor’s office has been asked to expand the number of participants but no decision has been made.

The first season of the 2020-2021 school year will be Winter sports with Fall sports being moved to February.
